Right to Open a Current Account (Basic Banking Service)

The basic banking service provides you with access to a bank account for essential daily transactions.

If you don’t have a current account and have been turned down by banks, you can still apply for a basic banking service at a bank of your choice. This allows you, for example, to:

  • receive money
  • make transfers
  • pay bills
  • use a payment card

You are entitled to the basic banking service if you are:

  • a consumer legally residing in a Member State of the European Union

or

  • a consumer of Belgian nationality residing outside a Member State who has been removed from the Belgian population register for less than 10 years

To be eligible, you must meet all the following conditions:

  • You do not already have a basic banking service or current account in Belgium, event with another bank
  • You have less than 10,239.43 euros across all your bank accounts combined, including funds with other banks
  • You do not have any credit agreements totaling 10,239.43 euros or more
  • You have not violated anti-money laundering laws
